Lytton Chinese History Museum

Location: Lytton, BC (completed 2025)

The new Lytton Chinese History Museum is conceived as a small but deeply meaningful civic building – an architecture of memory, craft, and community resilience. Rebuilt after the 2021 wildfire that devastated the village, the museum honors the historic presence of Chinese settlers in the Fraser Canyon while providing a space for reflection, learning, and community gathering.

The redesign references the historic 1912 Joss Temple that once stood on the site, recalling its simple gable form, rough-sawn timber, and modest footprint. The original floor plan has been carefully adapted to improve gallery flow and support storytelling through artifacts, archival materials, and oral histories. Tactile finishes evoke the intimacy of early pioneer museums, while charred wood interiors offer a quiet moment of reflection – acknowledging both the devastating fires and the site’s enduring legacy of resilience and healing.
